Maintenance company looks to task-specific hand protection
Victorian based Valley Maintenance Services carefully selected a range of safety gloves to match the task-specific demands of workers.
Aaron Pearce, Joint Managing Director, said, "Valley Maintenance Services has been in business since 1986. We carry out a lot of work for government housing, railways and similar departments. These departments have specific regulations, requiring anyone working on site is to carry the correct type of PPE.
"We work with welders, angle grinders, cutting equipment, and other potentially hazardous machinery, so safety is clearly a priority for us. We had mainly been using a rigger's glove for all our protection, but getting the guys to wear them was difficult because they were uncomfortable, cumbersome and didn’t provide the required degree of dexterity."
"Since the same glove wasn’t going to work for everyone, the obvious solution was to have a selection to complement each activity. Our goal is to have all our people wearing task-specific hand protection."
“We trialled a number of different gloves and the feedback has been extremely positive – Ansell HyFlex® and ActivArmr® gloves give our people all-day comfort; are easy to wear, do not restrict movement and the gloves stay cool all day, allowing the hands to breathe."
“Since we started using ActivArmr HVAC gloves on heavy labour tasks that involve handling sharp edged materials, we have noticed a dramatic reduction in the incidence of hand injuries. We’re also using the ActivArmr Carpenter gloves and the significant rate of safety improvement has been very encouraging with those as well."
“Ansell gloves are certainly a lot thinner than other gloves and because they have the specific protection needed for most of the work we are doing, our people are very happy to keep wearing them”, added Mr Pearce.
